Report: Lions believe Abdullah could miss rest of season

Injured Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah has a torn ligament in his left foot that could force him to miss the rest of the season, ESPN's Adam Schefter reports, citing a source.

The 23-year-old was placed on injured reserve Wednesday after sustaining the injury during a Week 2 game against the Tennessee Titans. The team did not elaborate on the nature or severity of the injury at the time.

He entered the season as the team's No. 1 back and opened the year with 120 total yards and a touchdown in a Week 1 win. He added 38 rushing yards on six carries before coming down with the injury in the team's second game.

Abdullah was drafted in the second round of the 2015 draft with the expectation he would become the team's long-term answer at running back. He had a quiet first season with 597 yards on the ground and just two rushing scores, but under new offensive coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, he was expected to be the focal point of the team's running game this year.

Fourth-year pro Theo Riddick, rookie Dwayne Washington, and fullback Zach Zenner will have to take over in Abdullah's absence.
