Quick tabbed as USA starter vs. Europe

Greg Bartram-USA TODAY Sports

Not surprisingly, Jonathan Quick will get the start in goal when the United States opens the World Cup against Team Europe on Saturday.

Head coach John Tortorella stated as much Friday, tabbing the Los Angeles Kings netminder - who out-dueled his American counterparts during exhibition play - as his starter for game one of the international tournament.

Quick played a team-high 100 minutes in two pre-tournament games, where he turned away a combined 62 of the 65 shots he faced, racking up a .954 save percentage and a 1.80 goals-against average.

The 30-year-old picked up wins in both his starts as the U.S. bested - tournament favorites - Canada 4-2 and Finland 3-2 in pre-tournament exhibition.
