Report: Lions' Bostic expected to be placed on IR

Detroit Lions linebacker Jonathan Bostic is expected to be placed on injured reserve as the team conducts its first round of roster cuts, reports Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Bostic, who landed with the Lions in an offseason trade from the New England Patriots, underwent surgery to repair a broken bone in his foot early in training camp. Head coach Jim Caldwell had said at the time that he wasn't sure whether the linebacker would be able to return at all this season.

With a mid-August report from Josina Anderson of ESPN indicating that Bostic would be facing a 6-12 week timeline for recovery, he'll presumably be a candidate for the Lions' lone IR-return designation when healthy.

An adjustment to previous regulations no longer requires teams to declare a player as such in advance of the official move to injured reserve, though, so Bostic's status for the season may not be decided for months to come.

As NFL Network's Ian Rapoport adds, the long-term injury could have an impact on the initial trade agreement with New England. Bostic missing more than eight games will reportedly see the Lions regain the conditional seventh-round pick they surrendered to acquire his services.

The 25-year-old entered his first training camp in Detroit competing for a depth linebacker job and core special teams role.
