Chicago Bears quarterback Connor Shaw suffered a gruesome injury to his leg during Saturday's preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Shaw suffered a broken leg just above the ankle, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, and was immediately carted off the field and taken to an ambulance with his leg immobilized in an air cast.

Head coach John Fox said the injury was "very serious" following the game, adding, "Thoughts and prayers are with him and his family."

Shaw was enjoying a solid performance in an effort to hang onto the Bears' third-string job behind Jay Cutler and Brian Hoyer. Shaw completed 5-of-6 passes for 68 yards and the Bears' lone touchdown.

In addition to Shaw, backup Brian Hoyer came out of Saturday's game. Hoyer is dealing with sore ribs, a source told Stacey Dales of NFL Network. X-rays were reportedly negative.
