Free-agent running back Stevan Ridley, who was released by the Detroit Lions on Thursday, is visiting the Indianapolis Colts on Friday, a source told Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Ridley appeared in eight games for the New York Jets last season, but didn't look 100 percent recovered from a 2014 ACL tear. The 27-year-old had over 2,000 yards rushing in two seasons with the New England Patriots earlier in his career.

The Colts are in dire need of depth to ease the workload on 33-year-old Frank Gore, the team's only established running back.

Journeyman Robert Turbin and undrafted rookie Josh Ferguson sit behind Gore on the depth chart, but neither have impressed during preseason.
