Auburn defensive back Stephen Roberts was arrested Wednesday night for possessing a firearm without a license and attempting to elude an officer, Auburn Police Capt. Lorenza Dorsey confirmed to James Crepea of AL.com.

Roberts was released from jail later Wednesday night on bond, Dorsey added. Both charges are misdemeanors.

"Coach (Gus) Malzahn is aware," an Auburn spokesman told AL.com in a statement Friday morning. "He is gathering all the facts and will handle the situation appropriately."

Roberts is projected to start at free safety for the Tigers this season after playing in all 13 games last year, starting the final four. As a sophomore, Roberts collected 26 tackles, 21 of which came in his four starts.

Auburn kicks off the new season Sept. 3 with a huge encounter versus No. 2 Clemson.
