Sanchez slugs another historic Yankees HR

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

The New York Yankees continue their youth movement, and Gary Sanchez keeps mashing baseballs.

The 23-year-old rookie hit his ninth home run of the year in Wednesday's 5-0 win over the Seattle Mariners, becoming the first Yankee player in history to accomplish the feat in his first 21 games.

He also joined some elite company, becoming only the fifth player in league history to hit nine or more home runs in his first 21 games.

Player Year HR At-bats
Trevor Story 2016 10 36
Gary Sanchez 2016 9 27
Alvin Davis 1984 9 34
George Scott 1966 10 32
Mandy Brooks 1925 9 28

Since the trade deadline, the Yankees are 13-9 and remain four and a half games back of an American League wild-card spot. A lot of that success can be attributed to Sanchez' historic performance, hitting .389/.450/.847 since being promoted on Aug. 3.
