Roma completely unravelled over the course of these 90 minutes. Daniele De Rossi committed a reckless studs-up challenge to receive the first red card, and his substitute, Emerson Palmieri, then proceeded to collect one of his own. There were moments for the Giallorossi to equalise at 1-0 - Radja Nainggolan put in a tireless shift - but there's nothing to show for it.

"Even after the first goal, we had chances. If it was 11 versus 11, we could have done much more," Nainggolan said afterwards. "When you are down to nine men and a goal down, it's normal to take risks and leave space at the back.

"We must learn from these errors because we could have done so much more."

Six of the past seven Italian qualifiers have now been knocked out before the group stage.

AS Monaco 1, Villarreal 0 (3-1 on aggregate)

Goals

  • Monaco: Fabinho - 90th minute

Fabinho scored his third penalty of the season to seal Monaco's place in the Champions League proper.

There were questions over the validity of the penalty call, as the ball appeared to hit Villarreal's Mateo Musacchio in the back and not along his arm. But the Yellow Submarine failed to produce the chances to take over the tie, registering just a single shot on goal at the Stade Louis II.

Monaco once again had to find a way to win without Radamel Falcao, who's still recovering from a thigh injury. It was Fabinho's penalty that gave the principality club an early lead in the first leg, and his spot kick book-ended a positive result over 180 minutes.

Viktoria Plzen 2, Ludogorets 2 (2-4 on aggregate)

Goals

  • Plzen: Michal Duris - 7th minute
  • Ludogorets: Virgil Misidjan - 17th minute

Ludogorets has reached the Champions League group stage for just the second time in club history. Virgil Misidjan scored his second goal in the tie, and Claudiu Keseru added a late insurance marker to knock out Viktoria Plzen.

The Bulgarian outfit had an easier time of it. With no substitutes remaining and its goalkeeper red carded in the 2014 Champions League play-off round against Steaua Bucharest, Ludogorets had no choice but to put defender Cosmin Moti in goal for the ensuing penalty shootout. Moti made a key stop and converted his own spot kick en route to a stunning victory.

Hapoel Be'er Sheva 2, Celtic 0 (4-5 on aggregate)

Before kickoff in Israel, the main storyline was political. Celtic supporters made a statement of solidarity with the Palestinian people during the first leg at Parkhead, flying flags behind one of the goals, and there were fears that political tension could rise this week at Turner Stadium.

But the biggest developments occurred on the pitch. Goals from Ben Sahar and Ovidiu Hoban gave Hapoel Be'er Sheva a fighting chance against Celtic, which carried a 5-2 aggregate lead into Tuesday's reverse fixture.

The Israeli side, however, lacked one last blow to complete the comeback.

Legia Warsaw 1, Dundalk 1 (3-1 on aggregate)

Goals

  • Dundalk: Robbie Benson - 19th minute
  • Legia Warsaw: Michal Kucharczyk - 90th minute

History suddenly seemed attainable for Dundalk, the Irish club looking to become the country's first participant in the Champions League group stage.

Robbie Benson's rocket of a volley cut Legia Warsaw's aggregate lead in half, and the Polish side then fell to 10 men in the second stanza.

But the opening closed in stoppage time, when Legia's Michal Kucharczyk curled in a late equaliser and secured his club's place in the next round.
