Arsene Wenger isn't giving up on the prospect of strengthening Arsenal's back line with the addition of centre-back Shkodran Mustafi.

With supporters growing frustrated with Arsenal's lack of activity on the transfer market, the gaffer was once again forced to defend his transfer policy after a goalless draw against defending league champions Leicester City.

However, he provided a glimmer of hope for fans desperate for another summer addition when he admitted he's optimistic about completing a deal to sign Mustafi from Valencia.

"Mustafi? We hope it will be done." Wenger admitted to French television, as translated by Sky Sports. He is one of a number of players we are looking at. Negotiations are ongoing."

Despite reportedly paying €35 million to secure Granit Xhaka's services shortly after the summer transfer window opened, pundits and supporters alike have criticized the long-time Arsenal boss for his lack of activity on the market, especially when it comes to adding to his defence.

The club has been forced to rely on young defenders Rob Holding and Calum Chambers at the back while the likes of Per Mertesacker and Gabriel Paulista deal with injuries.

Fortunately for Arsenal, first-choice centre-back Laurent Koscielny returned to the team in time for last weekend's draw with Leicester.

A deal for Mustafi could see Arsenal pay up to £30 million to convince Valencia to sell the German international, though Arsenal is reportedly trying to negotiate a transfer fee worth less than the Spanish side's valuation of the centre-back.
