Ewing shuts down possibility of anyone beating the Dream Team
Every four years the question gets raised: Could today's edition of Team USA beat the Dream Team?
Dream Team center Patrick Ewing says, unequivocally, that no other team would have a shot.
As Ewing told Jason Concepcion of The Ringer:
Could any of the post–Dream Team Olympic teams, including this one, have, not taken you guys, but given you a game at least?
No. No.
None of them could come close?
Maybe they could come close, but none of them could beat us.
Seven-game series, could they get a game?
They’d get a win. That’s it.
The best possible 2016 United States roster might be able to give the 1992 squad a challenge, but no team could possibly measure up to the reverence of the Dream Team.
That was the first time the U.S. sent a team of professional basketball players to the Olympics and they demolished the competition by an average of 44 points. That entire team - Christian Laettner included - was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
