Report: Patriots' Lewis to have 2nd knee surgery, remain on PUP list

Brian Spurlock / USA TODAY Sports

New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis will require a second knee surgery nine months after a torn ACL ended his 2015 season, reports Jim McBride of The Boston Globe.

Tom E. Curran of CSN New England adds that the next procedure won't involve the ACL or any other ligaments, but that it should be about eight-to-10 weeks before Lewis can resume training. As a result, he's reportedly set to start the season on the physically unable to perform list.

Lewis returned to the practice field for the end of OTAs this spring, before being placed on the PUP list to start camp, and subsequently missing all practices and preseason games.

While any sort of setback for Lewis' recovery is unfortunate news for both player and team, it appears likely that he'll return to the lineup at some point this season.

Indeed remaining on the PUP list into the regular season would require him to miss at least the first six weeks. If healthy, he'd first be eligible to play in an Oct. 23 matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

James White will presumably be first in line to inherit Lewis' role as New England's primary receiving back, rotating into games behind starter LeGarrette Blount.
