Turnovers from Siemian, Sanchez means QB race still wide open

For one quarter on Saturday, it appeared Denver Broncos quarterback Trevor Siemian was heading toward securing the starting role.

The young passer impressed against the San Francisco 49ers early, starting out 10-of-11 for 75 yards. He was playing conservatively, looking for his check downs quickly and getting the ball out of his hands, but that's not a negative for the Broncos.

With their running game and defense, head coach Gary Kubiak is looking for a passer who can avoid mistakes and play within himself.

Unfortunately, Siemian's night was ruined by a bone-headed pick-six - the exact type of turnover the Broncos are hoping to minimize from the quarterback position.

Siemian opened the door for Sanchez to jump ahead in the race, but the veteran could only run straight into it.

Sanchez, too, looked impressive early on in his stint, but lost two fumbles in quick succession.

Both passers were 10-of-14 with no touchdowns at halftime, with Sanchez passing for 120 yards and Siemian for 75.

First-round pick Paxton Lynch, who has become somewhat of an afterthought in this competition, took over the reins in the third quarter.

The Broncos have just two preseason games left in which to decide who to trust their Super Bowl-caliber roster to, and they came away Saturday with more questions than answers.
