John Arne Riise has ended two months of retirement by joining Chennaiyin FC of the Indian Super League.

Quite what tempted the Norwegian from his sofa sojourn to the high-paying South Asian division is unknown, but the former Liverpool and AS Roma left-back has signed a one-year contract to become Chennaiyin's marquee signing for the season.

It marks his second stint in India after representing Delhi Dynamos last year.

"He is a player with exceptional quality and experience. We look forward to having a great season from him," said Chennaiyin FC co-owner Vita Dani.

Famed over his career for having an explosive left peg and the ability to burst forward into the opposition's final third, Riise will be coached by 2006 World Cup winner Marco Materazzi at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
