Cespedes clarifies stance on potential opt-out with Mets

On second thought, maybe he won't stay with the New York Mets.

Hours after it appeared as though Yoenis Cespedes said he had no plans to opt out of his contract with the club, the slugger clarified that he "would like" to stay in Queens, though he hasn't yet made a decision about next season.

"I've said it before: My intentions, of course, are to be here for three years," Cespedes said through an interpreter Wednesday. "And if I could spend the rest of my career with the Mets, I would."

Cespedes, who's batting .295 with 25 homers and 64 RBIs this season, signed a three-year, $75-million contract with the Mets last offseason, and has a right to opt out after the World Series. He was acquired from the Detroit Tigers in 2015 for right-handers Michael Fulmer and Luis Cessa.

Although it appears as though he's happy in New York, testing free agency would mean he's not happy with what is essentially a two-year, $47.5-million contract over the next two seasons.

Either way, Cespedes says he has yet to bring it up with his agent.

"I haven't spoken about it at all," he said. "If anything were to happen, I guess that will be something to deal with in the offseason. My mind right now is just on playing. There's nothing that's making me get away from my contract, but I just haven't thought about it."
