Fernandez sets Marlins' single-season strikeout record

Jose Fernandez set the Miami Marlins' single-season franchise strikeout record Wednesday by picking up his 210th on the year to surpass Ryan Dempster's mark set in 2000.

The 23-year-old ace broke the record, which stood for almost 16 years, in only his fourth full season in the majors. Fernandez is the sixth Marlins pitcher to amass more than 200 strikeouts in one season.

"That's all fun, the strikeouts," Fernandez told reporters. "But you've got to win ballgames to get to the playoffs. That's what we want as a team."

Fernandez set the new franchise standard against the Kansas City Royals at Marlins Park.

He's been historically good pitching at home. Through his first 40 starts at Marlins Park, Fernandez has posted an ERA of 1.71 - the lowest mark in a pitcher's first 40 home starts since 1920, according to ESPN.

"Strikeouts are a big part of Jose," Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "He's got a lot of swing and miss in his stuff."
