Milan snaps up Sosa from Besiktas

After a long and frustrating search, AC Milan has finally found a new midfielder.

The Rossoneri confirmed the signing of Jose Sosa from reigning Super Lig champion Besiktas on a two-year contract Wednesday. The 31-year-old cost the Serie A outfit a reported €7.5 million.

"For its midfield, AC Milan was looking for an experienced, professional player with the will to do well," read a statement on the club's website. "The club has found in you these three components and has decided to sign a contract with you until 30th June 2018.

"Best of luck with us, Jose!"

Sosa takes up Milan's final non-EU spot, meaning it can no longer act on reported interest in Chelsea winger Juan Cuadrado and Boca Juniors starlet Rodrigo Bentancur.

He's the fourth signing of the summer, and the second since Chinese investors agreed to a deal in principle to take over the struggling Serie A outfit.

Funds are still at a premium in the current transfer market, with further investment expected to arrive in January at the earliest.

However, the club may find a way to make another midfield signing. Sky Sport Italia's Gianluca Di Marzio indicated earlier Wednesday morning that Milan has approached Bologna for 19-year-old pivot Amadou Diawara, who's also a target of Aston Villa and Napoli.

Milan has been looking for reinforcements ever since Vincenzo Montella's appointment in June. Last year's €20-million buy, Andrea Bertolacci, has so far failed to impress, while captain Riccardo Montolivo has drawn the wrath of fans over the past two seasons for sub-par displays.

It's a return to Serie A for Sosa, who played briefly for Napoli during the 2010-11 campaign. He also suited up for Diego Simeone's Atletico Madrid, and earned Player of the Year honours with Besiktas as the Istanbul side claimed the Super Lig title last season.

Sosa had been pushing for a move away from Turkey because of civil strife in the country. A gun and bomb attack in June at Istanbul's Ataturk airport - the third largest in Europe - left at least 41 people dead and more than 230 injured.

"The point is that my wife is afraid to live in Istanbul, Turkey, and I have fear for my daughters, too," he wrote on Facebook. "The last attack at the airport was very close to us, because my agents were there two hours before.

"After this, my family and I have taken the decision to leave Istanbul."
