Report: Pacers sign undrafted Poythress to partially guaranteed deal

The Indiana Pacers have agreed to a partially guaranteed deal with undrafted forward Alex Poythress, sources told The Vertical's Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Pacers already have 15 guaranteed contracts on their books, so they likely don't expect Poythress to crack their opening-night roster. Instead, the Kentucky product is expected to spend the majority of the season with the Pacers' D-League affiliate in Fort Wayne, Wojnarowksi reports.

Once a prized prospect, Poythress went unselected in this summer's draft after capping an up-and-down college career with an up-and-down senior season. He has an NBA-level physical profile, combining size and strength with great open-court speed, and he's a strong finisher who shot 64 percent on two-pointers last season.

His stock was hurt both by an ACL tear that cost him most of his junior season, and by his lack of hard skills; an inability to create for himself, handle the ball, or consistently knock down jumpers.

Poythress, who played with the Orlando Magic in summer league, could end up battling for a deep-reserve role with similarly raw or unproven Pacers forwards, like Jeremy Evans, Rakeem Christmas, Glenn Robinson III, and Georges Niang.
