Astros release struggling Gomez

The Carlos Gomez era in Houston is over.

Eight days after he was designated for assignment, the flashy outfielder was released by the Houston Astros, the team announced Thursday.

Although Gomez is free to sign wherever he likes, Houston remains on the hook to pay his remaining $9-million salary.

During the 2013 and 2014 seasons, the 30-year-old appeared poised for a big-time contract, batting .284/.347/.491 with 74 stolen bases and 47 homers in two All-Star seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers.

When he joined Houston in 2015, all of his offensive numbers took a dive and his defense began to flounder, rendering his explosiveness on the bases, in the field, and at the plate useless.

This season, he slashed a career-low .210/.272/.322 in 85 games, belting five home runs while striking out 100 times.

As it stands, the Miami Marlins, who lost Giancarlo Stanton to a season-ending groin injury, appear to make the most sense as a potential destination.
