5 players to watch in Saturday's preseason games

All eyes will be on Jared Goff during Saturday's four-game slate, as the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft will attempt to extinguish concerns about his NFL readiness.

With eight teams in action Saturday, here are five players to watch:

Jared Goff, Los Angeles Rams

Everyone assumed Goff was a lock for the Rams' starting job. That may still be the case, but as the preseason gets underway, the young quarterback finds himself behind veteran Case Keenum. The former Cal standout hasn't been impressive in training camp, struggling to adjust to the complexities of a pro system. Goff should see significant preseason action and needs to use those snaps to show that, while he's far from mastering the offense, his superior arm talent, poise, and playmaking ability makes him the Rams' best option under center.

Tyrell Williams, San Diego Chargers

With veteran wideout Stevie Johnson lost for the season after tearing his meniscus in practice, the most obvious candidate to replace his touches is James Jones, whom the Chargers signed recently. However, Jones could be challenged by second-year pro Williams. The young receiver has been lighting up the Chargers' camp, and at 6-foot-4, has the frame to line up outside. Dontrelle Inman should also be fighting for snaps as the No. 3 wideout, but Williams could be an under-the-radar breakout player if he earns Philip Rivers' trust.

Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys

When Kellen Moore was lost to injury, the backup quarterback position became a headache for the Cowboys once again. It appeared the club would move to acquire a veteran, but now seem ready to give fourth-rounder Prescott and second-year pro Jameill Showers a shot at securing the role. It's a smart move. When Tony Romo was twice injured in 2015, the mediocre veteran passers that replaced him sunk the Cowboys' season. Prescott is a raw prospect, but has shown more refinement than expected in camp, and could earn the backup job with some standout performances.

Hassan Ridgeway, Indianapolis Colts

The Colts' defensive line, a constant weakness for the club, appeared to have promise heading into 2016. But with Arthur Jones suspended for the first four games of the season, Kendall Langford dealing with a knee injury, and Henry Anderson still working back from a torn ACL, Indianapolis needs others to step up. Enter fourth-round defensive lineman Ridgeway. His versatility and pass-rushing skills means he's a favorite to start alongside Langford when the regular season begins.

Adolphus Washington, Buffalo Bills

With Reggie Ragland lost for the year due to a torn ACL, and Shaq Lawson sidelined for at least a quarter of the season after shoulder surgery, third-round defensive end Washington is the only Bills rookie set to make an immediate contribution. He'll likely start alongside Marcell Dareus and Kyle Williams on the defensive line, a unit that should carry the rest of the defense. Washington needs to prove he won't be a weak link, with Buffalo desperately in search of difference makers on the defensive side of the ball.
