San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Eric Rogers will miss the rest of the season after suffering a torn ACL in practice Thursday, head coach Chip Kelly announced Friday.

Rogers, a former CFL standout with the Calgary Stampeders, landed with the 49ers this offseason after fielding offers from a number of NFL teams.

While the transition from north of the border is often difficult, Rogers had seemingly entered his rookie camp with an opportunity to earn a role in the 49ers' receiver rotation.

Significant interest in the 25-year-old's services came on the heels of a dominant 2015 campaign in the CFL when he racked up up a league-best 1,448 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns on 87 receptions.

Rogers will now take the next few months to recover before setting his sights on competing for a roster spot in next year's camp.

San Francisco moves forward with Torrey Smith, Bruce Ellington, and Quinton Patton as the likely three-man group atop the receiver depth chart. Some younger talents will be given the opportunity to carve out roles as the preseason continues, and the 49ers could also look to bolster their depth at the position on the free-agent market.
