Chargers' McCoy: Unsigned Bosa 'definitely needs to be out there'

San Diego Chargers head coach Mike McCoy is growing increasingly concerned with Joey Bosa's contract holdout.

Bosa was selected third overall in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Ohio State, and figured to be an integral part of the defense's rebuild. However, Bosa did not sign his rookie contract and remains absent through the start of training camp.

McCoy's frustration continued to mount Saturday, as the team prepares for the upcoming season without their prized rookie.

"He definitely needs to be out here as a rookie. But no update on the status," McCoy told reporters via NFL.com's Kevin Patra.

"(Chargers General Manager) Tom (Telesco) made his comments the other day. It's the same today. We'll just keep on working at that and eventually it will get done. So, he needs to be here. I think everybody needs to be here, especially as a younger player. Through the installations and playing with your teammates and things like that. But we are going to coach the guys who are here. And the players who are here did a nice job today."

Bosa's point of contention is reportedly about the structuring of bonuses and offset language in his contract. Chargers general manager Tom Telesco attributed the holdout to 'small, fundamental differences' Friday.

McCoy stressed the importance of Bosa learning the Chargers' system and developing a camaraderie with his new teammates.

"The individual work with your teammates and the system and everything," McCoy said. "It's important for everyone to be here in training camp to get the timing down and continue to work with one another. The more you play together, the faster you're going to be able to play come game day."
