The Los Angeles Angels are playing Wednesday against the Kansas City Royals under protest following a contested play in the seventh inning at Kauffman Stadium.

The play in question occurred when Royals infielder Raul A. Mondesi laid down a sacrifice bunt that was thrown away by Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker. As a result of the error, Mondesi ended up on third base and the Royals scored two runs to tie the game at 3-3. Angels manager Mike Scioscia was adamant Mondesi was on the inside of the baseline when running to first and interfered with Shoemaker's throw, causing it to carom into right field. Scioscia pleaded with home plate umpire Phil Cuzzi and his crew to take a look at the play.

A nearly 10-minute delay followed as umpires huddled and conferred with the replay center in New York. The play was not overturned, which prompted Scioscia to protest the game.

The next Royals batter, Jarrod Dyson, tripled to score Mondesi; the Royals would add another run in the inning to take a 5-3 lead, and would hold on for a 7-5 victory.

Scioscia told reporters after the game that he is "100 percent confident" that Cuzzi misinterpreted the rule in question, and that he expects the league to uphold his protest.

Should the protest be granted, all statistics after the moment in question would be nullified and the game would be replayed from the point of dispute at a later date.
