It took A.J. Ellis nine years and 537 games, but he finally has his first MLB stolen base.

In the bottom of the second inning Wednesday at Chavez Ravine, the veteran catcher caught everyone in the ballpark off guard when he broke for second with Joc Pederson on third and Brandon McCarthy at the plate, ultimately notching his first big-league steal as catcher Luke Maile's throw skipped past Brad Miller and into center field.

Ellis, who turned 35 in April, entered the series finale 0-for-4 in big-league stolen-base attempts since debuting with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2008, and hadn't swiped a bag in a professional game since July 29, 2010, when he playing for the Albuquerque Isotopes of the Triple-A Pacific Coast League.

Clayton Kershaw, for whom Ellis has effectively served as a personal catcher for the last three years, so enjoyed his batterymate's historic swipe he took the bag into the clubhouse and had it authenticated, according to MLB.com's Ken Gurnick.
