Maryland's Durkin says negative recruiting is 'prevalent'

On the same day Michigan State and Ohio State coaches denied using negative recruiting tactics against Penn State - and the same day Penn State's James Franklin denied accusing those schools of using such methods - Maryland's D.J. Durkin said negative recruiting is "prevalent," according to Angelique S. Chengelis of The Detroit News.

Durkin, who was hired as Maryland's head coach after spending one year as Michigan's defensive coordinator, didn't accuse any specific program of taking up the practice, but told Chengelis that coaches know which programs negatively recruit against others.

Last month, Franklin said certain schools were using Penn State's child abuse scandal of several years ago against the program to this very day, making it more difficult for the Nittany Lions to attract top talent.
