The Cincinnati Bengals had plenty good reason to release Taylor Mays.

Mays - already subject to a four-game suspension for substance abuse - was waived because the 28-year-old safety is facing a second drug ban, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and Mike Garofolo.

The Bengals haven't dismissed the possibility of bringing back the veteran safety after he's served his suspension, which will now be at least eight games, according to Rapoport.

Mays picked up the first suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse program just days before signing a one-year deal in March. He was released Saturday.

Mays spent four seasons with the Bengals between 2011-2014 before playing with the Oakland Raiders last season.
