Former Seton Hall guard gives up pro ball for firefighting career

Jim O'Connor-USA TODAY Sports

Derrick Gordon had a successful college basketball career throughout his time at Western Kentucky, UMass, and Seton Hall, but has opted against a professional career overseas to become a firefighter.

The 6-foot-3 guard, who averaged 8.0 points for the Pirates in 2015-16, announced on Twitter that he's joining the San Francisco Fire Department.

Gordon has been a trailblazer throughout his collegiate career, becoming the first openly gay male NCAA Division I player after coming out in April 2014. He also became the first player ever to play for three different teams in the NCAA tournament with Seton Hall's visit in the 2016 event.
