Report: Padres agree to deal with Cuban prospect Jorge Ona
The San Diego Padres reportedly locked up another highly-touted international prospect Wednesday, signing Cuban outfielder Jorge Ona to a $7-million deal barely 24 hours after the teenager was declared a free agent by Major League Baseball, according to MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez.
Assuming the deal in finalized, the Padres will have committed more than $27 million to international amateurs since the signing period opened July 2 - well over their $3.347-million bonus pool - consequently forbidding them from signing a player for more than $300,000 in the next two international signing periods. (The Padres will also pay a 100 percent tax on the overage).
Ona, whose bonus pales only in comparison to the $11 million that 17-year-old left-hander Adrian Morejon landed from the Padres earlier this month, was listed by MLB.com as the eighth-best international prospect in this year's market, with plus power and an above-average hit tool.
In September, about 10 months before defecting from the island, Ona - 6-foot-2 and 192 pounds - went 14-for-22 (.636) with four homers and eight walks in eight games at the COPABE 18U Pan American Championship in Mexico.
