Texas Tech's Kingsbury 'loved' coaching Baker Mayfield

Baker Mayfield wasn't happy with the terms of his release from Texas Tech, but head coach Kliff Kingsbury only had positive things to say about the current Oklahoma quarterback.

"I know a lot has come from Baker's side, but I loved coaching him, loved the chip on his shoulder, cheered for him in every game except one, and it's been fun to see the success he's had," Kingsbury said Monday at Big 12 media day.

Mayfield was a walk-on at Texas Tech before transferring to the Sooners, but the Red Raiders did not release him to transfer within the conference. That meant Mayfield had to sit out 2014 and would've lost a year of eligibility before the Big 12 voted in June to change the rules for walk-on transfers.

Kingsbury confirmed the Red Raiders voted in favor of the change, which helped Mayfield, and believes things worked out well for everyone, with Patrick Mahomes now enjoying success behind center for Texas Tech.

"Patrick has stepped in for year three and was poised for a very good year, and I think that's where Baker wanted to be and it's worked out for him there and he's had a tremendous run," Kingsbury said. "I know Patrick wanted to be at Texas Tech and both guys have had a tremendous run."
