Team needs: 3 more moves Chelsea should make in the transfer window

Reuters

Coming into the 2016-17 campaign on the back of an ignominious 10th-place finish that cost Jose Mourinho his job and left the club without any European football, there was always going to be significant upheaval at Stamford Bridge this summer.

A new manager has been recruited, and with him - alongside some high-priced talent already locked up - expectations are high in west London. The Blues are being tipped to put last season's nightmare behind them by making a beeline for the Premier League crown, but further recruitment is necessary to bring that turnaround to fruition.

Here are three more moves Chelsea needs to make in the summer transfer window:

Add another central defender

John Terry is old. Gary Cahill is objectively average. Kurt Zouma is coming off a serious ACL injury, and hasn't played since February. Matt Miazga is only today celebrating his 21st birthday. For a squad with title aspirations, that's simply not going to cut it.

Prepare the chequebook, Roman. Antonio is going shopping.

New bench boss Antonio Conte has already bolstered both his attack and midfield this summer, inking blossoming Belgian striker Michy Batshuayi and tireless tackling machine N'Golo Kante. The next logical move is for the fiery Italian to shift his gaze towards an altogether uninspiring crop of central defenders.

Regardless if he opts to employ a four-man backline or make the shift to his familiar three-man defence, Conte will be on the lookout for an upgrade.

Naturally, given his history in Serie A, two stoppers plying their trade on the peninsula have been linked with a potential move to Stamford Bridge: Juventus' Leonardo Bonucci and Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly. The former would require massive expenditure, as the Old Lady has dug in her heels and looks destined to resist any approach for the Euro 2016 standout.

The French-born Senegalese international, then, looks a more logical target. An imposing 6-foot-4, Koulibaly improved markedly last season under Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri, making strides both with the ball at his feet and in his ability to read the play. Linked with some of Europe's top sides, he could be the ideal candidate to anchor Conte's defence.

Potential targets: Kalidou Koulibaly (Napoli), Leonardo Bonucci (Juventus), John Stones (Everton)

Upgrade at full-back

Branislav Ivanovic epitomised the struggles of his side last season, the hulking Serbian devolving from the Premier League's best full-back to a cumbersome relic too slow to keep pace with opposing wingers. His evisceration at the hands of Jefferson Montero in the opening match of the 2015-16 season was indicative of things to come.

Whatever formation he uses, Conte always values width, and as such he'll require energetic, tireless full-backs that can get up and down the flanks - and potentially operate as wing-backs when need be. At 32 years old and seemingly on the decline, Ivanovic doesn't fit that mould.

Cesar Azpilicueta and Baba Rahman could end up being Chelsea's first-choice full-back pairing - the Spaniard reverting to his natural role on the right side - but it wouldn't be a surprise if the Blues made a move to bolster the position given Conte's desire for incessant running.

"I want my wide players to come off the pitch spitting blood after an hour or so," he said ahead of Euro 2016.

Could he pry a familiar Italian face away from AC Milan, or perhaps even make a move for an undeniably talented Ivorian who sabotaged his career at Paris Saint-Germain by making obscene off-the-pitch remarks?

Potential targets: Mattia De Sciglio (AC Milan), Serge Aurier (Paris Saint-Germain)

Offload, and replace, Diego Costa

Prolific as he was in his first season at Stamford Bridge, Diego Costa, always straddling the line between expert agitator and reckless buffoon, looks set to be on his way out.

Atletico Madrid is interested in bringing the snarling Spaniard back to the Vicente Calderon, and even if the move comes at a financial loss to the deep pockets of Roman Abramovich, it could yield long-term gain.

In Michy Batshuayi, Chelsea has its striker of the future.

Offloading the oft-injured Costa could allow the 22-year-old to flourish, while simultaneously making room for another significant splash in the forward department.

Potential target: Alvaro Morata (Real Madrid)
