Virginia Tech's Alexander, Gaines to miss opener due to suspension

Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

Virginia Tech cornerback Adonis Alexander and defensive end Houshun Gaines will miss the season opener versus Liberty because of a suspension.

The pair were suspended indefinitely in April after an arrest for marijuana possession.

Hokies head coach Justin Fuente said that's the only game Alexander and Gaines would miss if they continue to comply with conditions the team had set after the incident.

Alexander played in 11 games last season and Gaines, a redshirt freshman, is expected to work into the pass-rushing rotation in 2016.
