Watch: Portugal parades Euro title on the streets of Lisbon

Thousands of proud Portuguese crowded the streets of Lisbon on Monday as they greeted their newly minted European champions, who boarded an open-topped, double-decker bus to parade the Henri Delaunay Trophy under the Iberian sun.

Green and red water cannons welcomed Portugal's plane on the tarmac, and Cristiano Ronaldo and manager Fernando Santos slowly emerged to lift the trophy in front of an estimated 5,000 people who gathered at Lisbon's airport.

The name on the tongues of supporters was Eder, the unlikely substitute who scored the winning goal in Sunday's final over France. The people chanted his name before the team made its way to Pombal Square to receive the Order of Merit of Commanders from Portuguese president Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

The honour had never before been bestowed on the national team.

Portugal, which famously lost at home to Greece in the finale of Euro 2004, is celebrating its first major international title.
