Miami has backup plan if stadium not ready for season opener

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

Miami athletic director Blake James has another strategy for the Miami Hurricanes football program should Sun Life Stadium not be ready for its season opener against Florida A&M on Sept. 3rd.

The Stadium, which is shared by the Miami Dolphins and the Hurricanes, is going through its second phase of renovations and may not be ready in time, according to the Miami Herald.

"We remain in regular contact with the Dolphins organization regarding the status of the stadium renovation project," James said in a statement. "It's a very complex project and I know the Dolphins are doing everything possible to get it ready in time to play football. We are very excited about what these improvements will mean for our fans and game-day atmosphere. We still expect to play all of our games at the stadium. However, we're aware that things could change and if they do we have a contingency plan in place if needed."

Marlins Park, home of the Miami Marlins, is available and also stands on the site of the old Orange Bowl, the Hurricanes' previous home before moving to Miami Gardens in 2008.

Other options would be FIU Stadium - home to Florida International - or playing the game at Florida A&M.
