Ex-Trail Blazers star Brandon Roy to coach high school team

Although injuries derailed Brandon Roy's career in the NBA, the former Portland Trail Blazers point guard has found another way to stay involved in the sport.

The 31-year-old will take over as the boys basketball coach at Nathan Hale High School in his native Seattle.

"Dr. (Jill) Hudson and the administration were looking for coaching stability," Seattle Public Schools executive director of athletics Eric McCurdy told Percy Allen of the Seattle Times. "I know B-Roy wants to coach and he wants to give back to the district. What better way to start than in the Seattle Public Schools system, where he played in the league."

Selected sixth overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2006, Roy was traded to Portland on draft night in exchange for Randy Foye. Roy went on to play five seasons with the Trail Blazers, averaging 19 points, 4.7 assists, and 4.3 rebounds in 326 games.

A degenerative knee condition forced the three-time All-Star into retirement in 2011, though he returned to play five games for Minnesota in 2012.

Roy will have some star power on his roster, as five-star recruit Michael Porter Jr. and his younger brother Jontay will transfer to the school.
