Royals send Cain to DL with hamstring strain

Jeff Curry / USA TODAY Sports

The Kansas City Royals placed Lorenzo Cain on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, one day after the All-Star center fielder strained his left hamstring while running out an infield grounder against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Cain suffered the injury during the seventh inning of Tuesday's loss after beating out the slow chopper hit to Cardinals shortstop Greg Garcia. He was scheduled to undergo a subsequent MRI, which appears to have confirmed the initial diagnosis that his hamstring was strained.

Cain's been among the more durable players for the snake-bitten Royals, who have lost Mike Moustakas, Alex Gordon, and Salvador Perez to injuries of varying degrees this season. An All-Star last season for the first time, Cain's hitting .290/.336/.416 with eight homers, 12 doubles, and six steals in 73 games.

In a corresponding move, the Royals recalled Triple-A outfielder Brett Eibner from Omaha.
