ESPN announced a contract extension with Trent Dilfer on Tuesday, re-upping with the quarterback-turned analyst just weeks after reports suggested he was on the way out.

Dilfer, who first joined the network in 2008, has long held a role on the pre- and post-game shows for Monday Night Football broadcasts.

Not only will he continue in that role as part of the multi-year deal to remain with ESPN, but he'll also now join a new-look panel for the weekly "Sunday NFL Countdown" shows.

"Trent's analysis and his passion for football consistently elevate the quality of our NFL coverage and we're excited to add him to Sunday NFL Countdown," Seth Markman, ESPN senior coordinating producer, said in a release. "As a veteran broadcaster, Trent will also make our analyst team better by sharing his expertise with some of our newcomers, just as he did with teammates as a successful NFL player."

Dilfer appears to be the fourth member added to the "Sunday NFL Countdown" crew in the last few months. Various reports surfaced earlier this offseason indicating that Randy Moss, Charles Woodson, and Matt Hasselbeck would be coming aboard in replacing Ray Lewis, Cris Carter, Keyshawn Johnson, and Mike Ditka.

Dilfer, a former first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, played for a number of teams throughout his 14-year playing career. The most notable of which came with the Baltimore Ravens in 2000, where he helped the team to a Super Bowl title.
