Though it looked like Jordan Spieth had finally got his 2015-16 season on track with a victory at the Dean & DeLuca Invitational at the end of May, he hasn't been able to maintain the success. He finished 57th at the Memorial Tournament the very next week, then settled for 37th at the U.S. Open with a disappointing Sunday round of 5-over par, 75.

He has participated in all three World Golf Championships event so far this season, finishing seventh at the HSBC Champions in November, 17th at the Cadillac Championship in March, and ninth at the Dell Match Play in late March. He's hanging onto second in the Official World Golf Ranking, but he continues to lose ground on No. 1 Jason Day.

Course History

Spieth has participated in this event just twice since making his PGA Tour debut in 2010. He finished 49th in his 2014 debut, then placed 10th in 2015. He tied for Sunday's low round with a score of 4-under, 66, one of his two rounds in the 60s that week. He failed to shoot a single round in the 60s in 2014, finishing at plus-5.

Statistical Breakdown

Per FantasyInsiders, the following stats have been strengths of previous winners at Firestone Country Club:

Driving Distance (DD)
Par 4 Efficiency 450-500 Yards (P4E)
Strokes Gained: Approach (SGA)
Birdie or Better Percentage (BoB)

Here's how Spieth has fared in the selected statistics thus far this season:

DD P4E SGA BoB
52 32 115 3

Three of Spieth's four key stats are largely unimpressive, but his rank of third in BoB may be the most important due to the nature of WGC events. There is no cut this week, which allows a player with the scoring ability of Spieth to be able to post lofty DFS scores, despite what me be a lackluster real-world finish.

Spieth leads the tour in birdie average, and he ranks fourth in scoring average. He ranks just 42nd in Going for the Green percentage, but he ranks third in Going for the Green - Birdie or Better, at 67.90 percent. He's selective in when he chooses to reach Par 5 greens in two, but when he does, he is typically rewarded. He ranks third while breaking par 26.04 percent of the time.

Daily Fantasy

While still in the upper echelon of the pricing tiers, Spieth has finally be supplanted by Dustin Johnson, following Johnson's U.S. Open victory. Spieth is a similar ranking when looking at the average fantasy points per week, with Adam Scott joining Spieth, Day and Johnson.

Spieth's (at times) tumultuous season has still included nearly twice as many birdies as bogeys, but he's made nearly as many scores worse than double bogeys than he has eagles, and he's made thrice as many doubles than eagles.

Still, with birdies being worth so much more than bogeys or worse negatively affect DFS scoring, Spieth is well worth a roster spot as a more contrarian selection without fear of a missed cut this week.

Season-Long Fantasy

Spieth remains ranked among the top of the A-List, where owners need to begin carefully selecting when to use their few remaining starts for the world's top golfers. The shallow player pool has led owners to use nearly every golfer at least once, while the top names are regularly forced into lineups.

Without a cut this week Spieth's volatility is taken out of the equation, making this a good week to use him, while saving the other top names for the remaining majors and more conventional tournaments.
