A reunion between the New York Mets and Jose Reyes could be on its way.

The Mets haven't made a final decision on whether they will reunite with their former shortstop just yet, but a source told Newsday's Marc Carig that all signs point toward the club signing the 33-year-old by the weekend.

Reyes could become a free agent Saturday if the Colorado Rockies - who requested waivers on the shortstop for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release Thursday - cannot find a trade partner.

New York has a clear need for infield help after third baseman David Wright underwent surgery for a herniated disk in his neck, shelving him for at least three months.

Reyes also "desperately longs" for a reunion with the team he spent the first nine seasons of his career, according to a recent report.

If released, Reyes would be available to sign with any team for the prorated portion of MLB's minimum salary, which is around $277,000 for the rest of the season.

The Rockies designated him for assignment June 15 after he played just 47 games with the club where he hit .259/.291/.368 with three home runs, 19 RBIs, and eight stolen bases.

During his time with the Mets, Reyes was a dynamic spark plug atop their order, slashing .292/.341/.441 with 81 home runs, 99 triples, 423 RBIs, and 370 stolen bases.
