Fabian Delph was dealt a devastating blow as he was diagnosed Thursday with a groin strain.

The midfielder was subsequently placed on England's standby list and is expected to miss Euro 2016 in France next month, manager Roy Hodgson confirmed.

"I've spoken to him and he's stayed in Manchester, and I've made it clear to him that this means he probably won't be with us in the final 23 - unless, of course, we have injuries," Hodgson told the Football Association's website.

"I've actually put him on the standby list, which he understands and accepts. I don't think it's going to be a really long-term injury for him so, if I needed him and I wanted him to come with us, it would be easy for me to ask him to do so.

"With the situation we have with the other 25 players, it might be unlikely."

News of his injury coincided with the announcement that Daniel Sturridge has been held out of training after injuring his calf. The Liverpool forward, who'll miss Friday's match against Australia, continues to have a shot at being named to England 23-man team when the European Championship begins June 11 versus Russia.
