Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah underwent shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum in January, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

The 2015 second-round draft pick is reportedly ahead of schedule in his rehab, but could be forced to sit out all offseason activities leading up to training camp this summer.

Coming off a rookie year in which he was unable to seize the lead backfield role, Abdullah is considered the runaway favorite to start this fall.

Though a missed offseason could temporarily put him behind the competition for such a role, getting healthy in time for training camp will certainly be the priority moving forward.

Theo Riddick, Zach Zenner, and free-agent addition Stevan Ridley will see work along with the first-team offense until Abdullah is able to make his return to the practice field.
