Gailey: Jets 'very comfortable' with Geno Smith as starter

After bringing his team within one win of a playoff appearance and achieving a career high in touchdowns, it appeared that Ryan Fitzpatrick would be returning as the quarterback of the New York Jets in 2016.

While Fitzpatrick stays firm with his high contract demands, the Jets are still trying to get that deal done, but they're also ready to move on with the quarterbacks they have.

Jets offensive coordinator Chan Gailey said that the team is "very comfortable" with Geno Smith as their starting quarterback heading into the season, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Head coach Todd Bowles told reporters that he is "hopeful" a deal can get done with Fitzpatrick by training camp, but he's not waiting around and admitted he's not following the negotiations.

"Just tell me when it's done," Bowles said about Fitzpatrick's contract talks with general manager Mike Maccagnan.

Smith was set to be the Jets' starter in 2015 before breaking his jaw in a locker room confrontation with former teammate IK Enemkpali prior to the season, allowing Fitzpatrick to take over under center.

The 25-year-old quarterback posted a 11-19 as a starter through his first two NFL seasons, and saw action in relief of Fitzpatrick once in 2015. He has registered 5,836 yards passing with 27 touchdowns and 35 interceptions through 31 career games.

Without Fitzpatrick in camp, Smith doesn't face much competition for the duty against rookie Christian Hackenberg and second-year quarterback Bryce Petty.
