Cincinnati Bengals tight end Tyler Eifert will undergo surgery Wednesday to repair his injured ankle and is hopeful he can return to the field in time for Week 1, NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports.

A worst-case scenario would see him miss the first few games of the season.

Eifert suffered the injury in the Pro Bowl and reportedly hoped to avoid surgery, but his ankle didn't heal as fast as he and the Bengals had planned.

The Bengals open training camp the last week of July, and the regular season on Sept. 11.

Eifert appeared in 13 games last season and broke out with 52 catches for 615 yards and 13 touchdowns, second most in the league.
