Rhode Island extends Dan Hurley through 2021-22

Rhode Island and head coach Dan Hurley have agreed on a contract extension through the 2021-22 season.

The extension adds another year to the deal he signed after the 2014-15 season, and guarantees an annual salary of $1 million from 2017-18 through the remainder of the contract.

"I am excited and proud to continue to lead the men's basketball program at the University of Rhode Island and my family is proud to call Rhode Island our home," the 43-year-old said in a statement. "The anticipation level for the upcoming season is high due in large part to the quality of the student-athletes we have recruited here."

Hurley was a highly sought-after coach among major conference schools with a vacancy last offseason. The program most interested in him was Rutgers, who offered a reported six-year, $12-million deal that he ultimately turned down.

"We are in a position to do something very special with our men's basketball program," athletic director Thorr Bjorn said in a statement to Bill Koch of the Providence Journal. "I can't think of a better person I would like to partner with to see this vision through than Dan."

In four seasons, Hurley has a 62-64 record, but the last two seasons have seen steady improvement, and the Rams return a squad that should find its way into preseason top-25 polls.
