Report: Giants, Bengals also put in waiver claims for Mettenberger

Former Tennessee Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger was awarded to the San Diego Chargers via waivers on Tuesday, but the Chargers weren't the only team to submit a claim.

Both the New York Giants and Cincinnati Bengals put in claims for Mettenberger, ESPN's Field Yates reports, but missed out because the Chargers have a higher waiver priority by virtue of their worse record in 2015.

The claims may be telling about how the Giants and Bengals view their quarterback depth charts. Both have established starters in Eli Manning and Andy Dalton, respectively, and what many assumed were established backups in Ryan Nassib and AJ McCarron.

But perhaps the Giants and Bengals don't feel great about their backups, and see Mettenberger as an upgrade. Or perhaps they simply feel the former Titans passer is too good to pass up, if only as a training camp arm.

Either way, it's the Chargers who have added Mettenberger to their roster. There, he is reunited with former Titans head coach Ken Whisenhunt, who is now the Chargers' offensive coordinator and will likely serve as the backup and perhaps eventual successor to Philip Rivers.
