The Chicago Fire announced Tuesday they've acquired Michael de Leeuw out of FC Groningen.

The club signed the Dutch forward to a three-year contract with a fourth-year option using targeted allocation money after acquiring his discovery rights from the Philadelphia Union for $50,000 in general allocation money.

The 29-year-old has been a mainstay with Groningen over the past four seasons, making 117 appearances in the Eredivisie and scoring 46 goals. He reunites with former teammate Johan Kappelhof in Chicago, with the defender making the move to the Fire earlier in the season.

"To be a team that adapts to other teams was good to hear," De Leeuw said in a statement. "I spoke with Johan Kappelhof many times and he had good things to say about the club and the city of Chicago, which all makes me excited to be joining the Fire."

General manager Nelson Rodriguez said in a statement: "Michael hungers to score goals and to win. That mentality as well as his versatility to play several of the attacking roles will be valuable additions to our club."
