Martz: Goff's ability under pressure similar to Warner's

No one's been able to fill the void at the Los Angeles Rams' quarterback spot since likely Hall of Famer Kurt Warner left at the end of the 2003 season.

The Rams hope the first overall pick in this year's draft, Jared Goff, will be the passer to finally do so. The man who guided Warner, Mike Martz, believes Goff shares a similar trait with the quarterback who led the Rams to their only Super Bowl title.

"He's pretty special," Martz said, according to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. "He has what Kurt had, and I hadn't seen anybody like that necessarily for a long time. He will stand in there and make throws under duress like I haven't seen anybody else do since Kurt, really."

Martz tutored Goff and fellow first-round passer Carson Wentz for a day earlier in the offseason, and came away impressed with both players.

"Carson Wentz, I've never seen anybody throw the ball like that," Martz said. "Ever. I've never seen that kind of arm strength on anybody, and still be able to throw a touch ball and all those things. And he was just a sponge to everything you said."

Martz plucked Warner out of obscurity, molding him into a league and Super Bowl MVP. The Rams' only quarterback to make the Pro Bowl since Warner left, Marc Bulger, was also a Martz project, so it's fair to say he knows a top-level passer when he sees one.

"I think they're both franchise quarterbacks," he said. "I'd be amazed if these two guys don't have terrific careers. They're of the quality where you can build a whole franchise around them."
