Report: Saints to work out Matt Shaughnessy

The New Orleans Saints will work out free-agent defensive end Matt Shaughnessy over the weekend, reports Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Shaughnessy, a seven-year veteran, is coming off a 2015 campaign in which he was unable to catch on with another team after the Arizona Cardinals released him in September.

Having played the first four years of his career with the Oakland Raiders, the 29-year-old has ties to Saints defensive coordinator Dennis Allen.

If signed, Shaughnessy would transition back to a defensive end role as part of the Saints' 4-3 front. Though he doesn't offer much in terms of pass-rush value, his presence in base packages opposite Cameron Jordan could significantly upgrade New Orleans' 31st-ranked run defense.
