Welbeck out 9 months after knee surgery; will miss Euro 2016

Danny Welbeck's chances of featuring for England at Euro 2016 are over.

Arsenal confirmed the striker's worst fears Wednesday, announcing the versatile attacker will be sidelined for nine months after undergoing knee surgery to repair cartilage damage suffered during Sunday's match against Manchester City.

That timeline suggests the 25-year-old won't return to action until February of next year.

"Specialists determined surgery was required after scans and tests revealed significant cartilage damage," a statement from the Gunners read. "Everyone at Arsenal will be working hard with Danny throughout his recovery and look forward to seeing him back on the pitch as soon as possible."

Welbeck had only recently gotten back on the pitch following a 10-month absence, as surgery on his left knee saw the angular Englishman make his season debut in February.

He scored five goals, adding a pair of assists, in all competitions since making his comeback.

The news will come as a blow to England boss Roy Hodgson, a known admirer of Welbeck's ability to play multiple positions across the front line. The former Manchester United man was widely expected to be included in Hodgson's squad for this summer's tournament in France.

Hodgson has reportedly been looking at Welbeck's Arsenal teammate Theo Walcott, along with Newcastle winger Andros Townsend, as potential replacements.
