Arsene Wenger calls Spurs supremacy a 'one-off'

Arsene Wenger isn't prepared to accept a scenario where Tottenham makes a habit of finishing above Arsenal in the Premier League standings.

The long-time manager has predicted Tottenham's successful campaign, where Spurs continue to edge closer to finishing above Arsenal for the first time in over 20 years, is a unique occurrence that his team's north London neighbours will struggle to replicate.

In fact, Wenger has not given up hope that his side can still catch Tottenham, despite Arsenal's three-point deficit with two matches remaining ahead of Sunday's game against Manchester City.

"It is still an important game, even if Leicester are champions and we are second best," Wenger told reporters Friday.

"It is still a very important game because part of the responsibility of being a professional is to prepare the future, and the future of Arsenal Football Club depends on this game.

"Our target now is to secure a position in the Champions League next year and, if possible, to get in second place or at least secure third place. On Sunday, we can achieve that."

Regardless of the unlikelihood of Arsenal eclipsing Tottenham's point total, Wenger can't picture a repeat in the years ahead.

"If they do that, you can at least say it is a one-off because in 20 years, it has happened once," Wenger said.

"But at the moment, it is not done."

Arsenal has a chance to retain its title as kings of north London for at least one more week if it can manage a victory at the Etihad Stadium against City, while Spurs will hope to edge closer to ending years of Arsenal fans celebrating St. Totteringham's Day with a home victory against Southampton.
