Whoops! Cardinals coach interferes in bizarre play

MLB.com

The old third-base-coach-interference trick didn't quite work for the St. Louis Cardinals this time.

Though the Cardinals tied the game on this play, the sequence itself was one of the weirdest you'll ever see on a baseball diamond, and it nearly cost the home team a win.

Here's how it went down: With the bases loaded and one out, Stephen Piscotty hit a slow grounder to Phillies shortstop Freddy Galvis that scored Kolten Wong to tie the game at 4-4. Galvis kept the ball from going into left field, and rolled the ball toward third base to try and force pinch-runner Carlos Martinez.

That's when things got weird. Martinez overran third base, and Andres Blanco tried to run him down - but third base coach Chris Maloney, who for some reason was not in his coach's box, got in the way.

Martinez was immediately called out on interference, but not before the rundown was completed, despite there being no need to do so.

During all of this, Aledmys Diaz snuck over to third base, which worked out perfectly for the Cardinals. The next batter up, Matt Holliday, singled home Diaz, and the Cardinals walked off the Phillies 5-4.
