Report: Bills opt against extending EJ Manuel

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports / Reuters

The Buffalo Bills declined to use their fifth-year option on quarterback EJ Manuel, according to ESPN's Mike Rodak.

Manuel would've been paid $11.3 million for the 2017 season if the team used its option on him - a somewhat untenable proposition considering he's second on the depth chart behind incumbent starter Tyrod Taylor. The Bills also selected quarterback Cardale Jones in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, and the former Ohio State product will challenge Manuel for the backup slot.

Entering the 2016 season, Manuel carries a $2.8-million cap hit, and is slated to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year.

Manuel was selected in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft, but failed to live up to pre-draft expectations. The 26-year-old completed 61.9 percent of his passes for three touchdowns against three interceptions in 2015.
